Intra-oral photography for dentists

Fotografia intra-orale per dentisti

Intra-oral photography, as the term itself suggests, refers to scientific documentation produced by a camera of the inside of the mouth, and particularly the condition of the patient's dentition, in order to track a specific situation or simply to compare the pre- and post-intervention situation, also for marketing purposes.

To achieve excellent intra-oral photographs, we obviously need adequate equipment. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a macro lens and a ring flash or twin-light flash are the best companions for this discipline. Personally, I would recommend a camera body with an APS-C sensor because it allows us to have a good focal ratio with a shallower depth of field compared to full-frame.

In intra-oral photography, what dominates is certainly lighting (and for this, one must master flashes and light modulation, a far from simple subject) and depth of field, which will allow us to focus on the entire framed area without unnecessary blurring.

Last but not least, attention must also be paid to the condition of the patient's surrounding oral environment; excessive plaque or salivation are examples of elements that disturb the photograph that should be corrected before shooting, as they cannot always be corrected later with post-production software.
