Extension tubes are simple metal tubes, perfectly light-tight, inserted between the camera body and the lens. They leverage the laws of optics, according to which, by increasing the distance of the lens from the focal plane, the magnification ratio increases, while simultaneously decreasing the minimum focusing distance.
